Practitioner Lecture: Exploring Plant Biotechnology with Researchers from BRIN

On Monday, 25 November 2024, the Bachelor Programme of Biology Education proudly organised Kuliah Praktisi with the theme “Bioteknologi Tanaman”. This event, which was held online via the Zoom platform, featured a distinguished speaker, Dr. Nurul Fitriah, M. Si., a researcher from the Research Center for Genetic Engineering, National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN).

This guest lecture is part of the supporting activities for the course Plant Growth and Development and Introduction to Molecular Genetics, taught by Mrs Hayatul Fajri, S.Si., M.Si.. This event was moderated by Rita Lisnawati and was attended by students of the degree programme as well as other participants who showed great enthusiasm for biotechnology-related issues.

The event commenced with an opening remark delivered by the course lecturer, who emphasised the importance of utilising biotechnology to address global challenges. In her presentation session, Dr Nurul Fitriah discussed various biotechnological innovations, such as the application of genetic engineering technology to produce crops that are resistant to environmental stress, pests, and diseases. She also highlighted the significance of biotechnology as a sustainable solution for natural resource management.

During the discussion session, participants demonstrated great enthusiasm by posing a wide range of questions related to the latest technologies, such as genetic engineering, the potential of biotechnology to enhance food security, and ethical considerations in the development of genetically engineered crops.

The event concluded with a summary of the material delivered by the moderator, who emphasised the importance of synergy between research and its practical application in the field.

This practitioner lecture provided new insights that enriched students’ understanding of the role of biotechnology in the modern era. The Bachelor Programme of Biology Education hopes that similar activities can continue to be held to inspire and motivate students in exploring scientific innovation.
